‘Holy smokes, it’s like a maternity ward out there!’ one guest proclaimed. And frankly, she was right! Perhaps there’s a yet-to-be-discovered fertility drug in sedge grass, but the number of sows sporting various generations of cubs observed so far this season is absolutely incredible. Given that all cubs are born Aquarius, this welcome scenario whereby we have seen everything from cub-of-year to third year cubs, offers an exciting opportunity for guests to appreciate how quickly these beautiful animals grow from one year to the next under the watchful eye of Mama bear. From a behavioural standpoint, it’s also interesting to witness these young bears exploring their environment and watching how their priorities change from mischievous, carefree C-O-Y to Version 2.0 eating machine and ultimately to apex predator.
