How to Get to Telegraph Cove — Your Tide Rip Grizzly Departure Point

Meet us in Telegraph Cove, a picturesque village nestled on the northeast coast of Vancouver Island. Recognized as an iconic hub for eco-tourism, Telegraph Cove is our scenic launch point for our grizzly tours. Getting here is an essential part of the adventure, offering spectacular views as you travel to Northern Vancouver Island.

Telegraph Cove is 1 hour south of Port Hardy, which is accessible by air or by sea via BC Ferries. If travelling on Vancouver Island you can reach us via Highway 19.

Important GPS Note:

Telegraph Cove is approximately 15 km off of Highway 19. The paved turnoff has excellent signage and ample forewarning. Do not solely rely on onboard GPS systems, which can sometimes provide incorrect routing.

Finding Tide Rip’s Office

Follow the boardwalk along the left-hand side, past the historic buildings, to the west end of the village. You will find Tide Rip HQ on the right, directly across from Prince of Whales Whale Watching. Paid parking is available at the cove entrance, just a short walk from our office.

  • 7 hours (434 km — including a 2 hour ferry) drive north of Vancouver.

Fly-in Options to Port Hardy (YZT) & Connecting Ground Transportation

For those short on time, flying is the fastest way to reach the Great Bear Rainforest region.

Step 1: The Flight

Flights arrive at Port Hardy Airport (YZT), located approximately 50 minutes north of Telegraph Cove.

  • Route: Vancouver International Airport (YVR) ➝ Port Hardy (YZT).
  • Duration: Approx. 1 hour 15 minutes.
  • Schedule: Daily flights are available year-round.

Step 2: Ground Transportation to Telegraph Cove

There is no public bus or scheduled shuttle directly to Telegraph Cove. You must arrange one of the following:

  • Rental Cars: National Car Rental and Budget both have kiosks at the Port Hardy Airport.
  • Taxi Services: Taxis should be pre-booked to ensure availability upon landing.

Where can I fly into on Vancouver Island?

The closest airport is Port Hardy (YZT), about a 45-minute drive from the Cove. Alternatively, you can fly into Comox (YQQ) or Campbell River (YBL) and enjoy a scenic 3 to 3.5-hour drive north.

Is there parking available in Telegraph Cove?

Yes. A paid public parking lot is located on your right as you enter the village. After parking, visit our office and we can advise you on the specific parking protocols for the day.

How do I get to Telegraph Cove?

Telegraph Cove is accessible by car via Highway 19 on Northern Vancouver Island. We strongly recommend arriving at least one day before your tour to enjoy the area and ensure a timely departure.
