I’M SO FULL BUT IT TASTES SOOO GOOD!

Last  news from the home front happily reported the good fortune of high numbers of tasty salmon making their inspiring journey back into the river- and the bears merrily feeding away accordingly, preparing themselves for their winter denning period.  But is there such thing as too much of a good thing?  Tummies are barely clearing the ground as the satiated bears become more rotund and are garnering comments on their extended belly sizes; ‘roly-poly’ and ‘butterball’ seem more apt adjectives for them as of late.  Pre-spawn salmon mortality due to warm water temperatures has the bears on fast-track calorie accumulation, and they can’t stop gobbling up all the fishy morsels that has turned the river into a murky soup of salmon carcasses.  While our resident mothers, Bella and Lenore, pack away their rumpled spring dresses in exchange for their more sleek, fall ensembles, one can only hope there is elastic in the waist bands!

But what does such a large, premature population loss mean for our pink friends?  A single female pink salmon can lay up to 1,500 eggs! If offshore survivorship remains favourable we can still expect the keystone species of the coast to support the seemingly unquenchable appetite of the plump and pudgy cubs that are using the estuary as their personal playground!
